Coast Guard Auxiliary celebrates 82nd birthday

Posted

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is recognized for marking a special milestone as it celebrates its 82nd birthday.
Dating back to June 23, 1939, the Coast Guard Auxiliary has a tremendous history of outstanding uniformed volunteer service, keeping both America’s waterways and its boating public safe. Born out of Congressional authorization to create the Coast Guard’s “Volunteer Reserve” force in 1939 and then further defined in U.S. Code in 1941, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and its talented and devoted uniformed volunteer workforce has supported Coast Guard missions along our nation’s coasts and inland lakes and rivers. Using their own boats and aircraft, Auxiliarists can be seen patrolling the waterways to offer vessel safety checks or flying above to assist active duty personnel in life saving search and rescue operations.

Thanks to Coast Guard Air Training Mobile for inviting us to lunch at the Officer's Club to celebrate the 82nd Birthday of the Coast Guard Auxiliary on June 23, and thank the Auxiliary for past support in helicopter drops and standing communication watches as operational duty officers. Special thanks to CDR Jack Souders, Executive Officer, and some of his staff for being our hosts. We also discussed future missions where we, the Auxiliary can be a force multiplier.

Representing the Auxiliary were members from Division 3, in attendance were 3 past Division Commander and one current Division Commander (Barry Fox, Rick Quinn, Larry Jensen, and Richard Geiger). Also in attendance representing the Auxiliary were current Operation Duty Officers (Mack Hughes and Jerry Maddox), future ODOs (Michael Palmer and Richard Geiger). Auxiliary members representing Captain and crew of the Ring Dang Doo were Rick Quinn, Barry Fox, Jim McNeil and Carsten Wellman.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary has 3 Flotillas in Baldwin County; Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, Foley and Fairhope, Alabama. If you want to serve your community and country, I encourage you to visit http://cgaux.org/ and learn more about boating safety, receiving a free boating safety check, take a boating safety or how you can help by joining the Auxiliary.
