SPANISH FORT - The Class 6A, Region 1 schedule got back under way when the Toros defended the Fort from a Tiger attack Saturday. Baldwin County High flashed some teeth throughout, but could not punch one in until late in the game.
Toros quarterback Brendon Byrd was on the throwing end of four SF touchdowns after his defense scored a safety for an early 2-0 lead. Johnny Morris III scored for SF on a 16-yard inside run to cap a 75-yard drive. The point-after kick was blocked.
Trevaughn Reed caught a 30-yard pass from Byrd for the next SF touchdown. Lucas Breaux’ PAT kick then made it 15-0 before the end of the first quarter.
Byrd threw a 31-yard TD strike to Mario Montgomery and an 18-yarder to Zachariah Hixon to spot the Toros a lead at the half. SF extended that to 36-0 when Byrd found Zachariah Hixon again near the end of the half. In the third quarter, Chico Hixon scored on a 7-yard off-tackle run.
Ry’derius Brown scored on a 6-yard run for BCHS with 4:03 left in the third quarter. Christian Burkhalter blocked the PAT attempt.
After Hurricane Sally and COVID-19 concerns, region play continues (Oct. 2) as the Tigers are set to play at McGill-Toolen Catholic and the Toros travel to Saraland.
