The Alabama Independent School Association crowned track and field state champions at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores at the end of last week.

The Snook Christian Eagles were among the featured athletes competing for top spots among the state’s best.

Senior Savannah Clayton took ninth in the discus with a 70’ 8” throw and was joined by both 4x800-meter relay teams in registering top-10 finishes. The girls’ squad finished seventh in 13:40.08 and the boys’ team also finished seventh with a time of 10:53.88.

Sophomore Tyler Shaffer and eighth-grader Lucas Merchant finished consecutively in the 1600-meter run with times of 5:52.77 for 10th and 5:53.00 for 11th.

On the junior varsity stage in Atmore on April 6, Danny Doerr, a freshman from Stockton, set the 3200-meter state meet record by 12 seconds for host Escambia Academy. Doerr’s time of 10:58.41 broke the previous AISA JV state meet record set in 2005 by another Cougar, Alan Ash, at 11:10.15.

Doerr added fifth in triple jump (31’ 1”) as well as second in the 1600-meter run (5:12.32) and 800-meter run (2:23.68) to help Escambia Academy claim the Class 1A-2A team title.
