Alabama launches second phase of Meat Processing Program, offering financial support to local businesses

The Alabama Agricultural Development Authority (AADA) has announced the opening of applications for the second phase of the Alabama Meat Processing Program (AMPP). According to a news release, this initiative stems from a $15 million grant awarded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through the Meat and Poultry Intermediary Lending Program (MPILP) to the AADA. Applications for Phase II are currently open and will remain so until June 14.

The primary aim of the program is to provide low-interest loans to support meat and poultry slaughter and processing businesses across Alabama. These loans are earmarked for various purposes, including the acquisition or construction of new facilities, expansion of existing facilities, procurement of new equipment, startup expenses and the recruitment of additional personnel.

"We were encouraged by the interest and complexity of the projects in round one. I look forward to the results from Phase II," said Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Rick Pate in the release. "I continue to encourage business owners who are currently engaged in or thinking of starting to process meat (cattle, swine or poultry) to apply."

The AMPP, guided by AADA's mission, aims to enhance opportunities for Alabama's meat producers to enhance the marketing of their products. Furthermore, it seeks to bolster Alabama's rural economy by providing financial assistance to small business owners looking to either expand existing or establish new slaughter or processing facilities.

While a portion of the original $15 million allocation has already been allocated, applications for the remaining funds will be accepted until June 14.

Established in 1980 by the Alabama Legislature, AADA functions to promote agriculture and provide financial support to agricultural businesses within the state.
