ROBERTSDALE — At its meeting on Monday, Sept. 20, the Robertsdale City Council approved a pair of measures to fund activities for Robertsdale High School.

First, the council voted to donate $500 each to the FFA programs at Robertsdale High School and the South Baldwin Center for Technology to attend the 94th Annual National FFA Convention Oct. 26-30 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Student representatives from both groups along with instructor Jeff Kelley were present during the morning meeting at Robertsdale City Hall.

All of the students present, along with others will be competing with FFA representatives from throughout the country in a variety of events, including communications, technology and mechanical systems, agronomy, dairy cattle evaluations and management, employment skills, environmental and natural resources, public speaking, farm and agribusiness management, floriculture, food science and technology, forestry, horse evaluation and livestock evaluation.

“This trip is a valuable learning experience for our members,” according to a letter included in the meeting’s agenda. “We will attend sessions that include several keynote speakers.”

One of the highlights of the trip is the Expo. Students will be able to explore career and educational opportunities from more than 450 industry leading exhibitors.

The trip will also include tours of Fair Oaks Farms and Ozark Fisheries around Indianapolis, Kelley said.

The event is also a recruiting opportunity for students, with colleges with agriculture programs represented from every state in the nation.

The council also voted to donate $1,750 each to the Robertsdale High School girls’ and boys’ basketball teams to provide gym sponsorships for the upcoming season.

Sponsorships will include a spotlight ad, which will be on the wall of the school’s gymnasium as a large basketball. Sponsorships also include season passes to all home games including tournaments.

The city’s logo would also appear on the back of T-shirts for the 9th Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Tournament which will be held in November.

The city will also have an ad on the school’s new scorer’s table which would be displayed at home games and during the tournament.

Coach Marshall Davis said the tournament will include eight girls’ teams and eight boys’ teams from throughout the state. The sponsorship will help offset the cost for officials.

In other business on Sept. 20, the council voted to approve 2021 utility write-offs in the amount of $23,192.47.
