Daphne to improve downtown parking access

DAPHNE – An addition to the new parking lot at City Hall should improve access and traffic flow on Main Street, city officials said.

The Daphne City Council voted Monday, April 19, to approve an addition to the new parking lot at a cost of $60,000. Mayor Robin LeJeune said the addition should help people parking in the downtown area and area businesses.

“We’ve got the brand-new parking right next to us here at City Hall and behind the restaurants here,” LeJeune said “What this will do is connect the restaurant of Guido’s and this current City Hall parking lot with our brand-new parking lot to offer a throughway for traffic to come off Main Street. If they can’t find a parking spot at the restaurant, they don’t have to back out into Main Street. They’ll be able to follow through to our parking there or pull into City Hall.”

“It just gives a much better access and causes less traffic buildup, especially at Belrose at that light,” LeJeune added.

Councilman Ron Scott said the addition should also help with deliveries and prevent the current problems with large trucks parking on downtown streets.

“Currently, you have vendors with large trucks that park in the middle of Main Street to unload, because there’s no other way,” Scott said. “They can’t turn around, but with this flow-through access then we’re hoping that the trucks will be there. They’ll park there and then they can pull through. It’ll help traffic on Main Street. It’ll be helped by the people who traverse that daily.”

The new parking lot was recently completed at City Hall. The lot has an entrance from Belrose Avenue and 32 additional parking spots for visitors to downtown Daphne city offices, parks or area stores and restaurants. The project cost $322,386.
