Endodontists advocate for natural teeth preservation during Save Your Tooth Month

May marks Save Your Tooth Month, an annual observance dedicated to highlighting tooth-saving procedures and the professionals responsible for preserving teeth, known as endodontists.

The importance of maintaining natural teeth is highlighted by the American Association of Endodontists (AAE), emphasizing the irreplaceable function and aesthetic of natural teeth. Consistent oral hygiene practices, including regular dental check-ups, are vital in ensuring dental longevity.

However, instances of tooth infection or disease may necessitate additional care. The AAE warns against the long-term consequences of tooth loss, which can impact quality of life, dental health and incur substantial costs. Root canal therapy, frequently favored over tooth removal, has been praised for its effectiveness in alleviating pain and maintaining the integrity of natural teeth according to reports.

Dr. Natasha M. Flake, President of the AAE, stresses the importance of understanding treatment options and their implications on dental health.

“Modern endodontics offers advancements in technologies, procedures and materials, giving you many treatment options to save your natural teeth. It’s important to understand your choices and how they’ll impact both your tooth and your future dental health,” Dr. Flake said in a news release.

To dispel misconceptions surrounding tooth pain and infection, the AAE offers guidance:

  • Prioritize root canal treatment over extraction whenever feasible, as it preserves natural teeth and eliminates discomfort.
  •  Seek immediate attention for symptoms of swelling or pain, as most endodontists offer emergency services.
  • Inquire about root canal treatment if tooth extraction is recommended by a dentist.
  • If root canal treatment is deemed inappropriate, seek consultation from an endodontist for personalized care. Endodontists specialize in preserving teeth and devising tailored treatment plans to ensure dental longevity.

“In a disposable era, some things are worth preserving. It’s always best to retain your natural teeth whenever possible and endodontic treatment, which helps you maintain your natural smile, continue eating the foods you love and limits the need for ongoing dental work, should be your first choice for the best health and cosmetic results,” Dr. Flake said.
