Fairhope food scene changes

The restaurant landscape is always changing but in the last few months in Fairhope, the change has come rapidly. Here's what's new, closed or relocated in Fairhope.

Closures

Ferus by the Bay – An offshoot of Ferus Artisan Ales in Trussville, Ferus By the Bay opened on South Church Street in 2022. The massive outdoor deck was the site of many evenings of live music, drinks and food. The restaurant announced April 14 would be its last day of service.

Sebastian's – Self described as a French American steakhouse; Sebastian's opened in the site of the former Café 98 (originally Ruby Tuesday) in Aug. 2023. The restaurant with white table clothes, a grand piano and waitstaff in bowties, the French inspired restaurant tried to bring a new cuisine to Fairhope. The restaurant's Facebook page has not had a new post since Feb. 23 and says temporarily closed, the signage on the restaurant has been removed.

Relocations

Dragonfly Foodbar – News of Dragonfly Foodbar leaving downtown Fairhope caused a lot of mixed reactions for the Dragonfly community. Some customers were sad, some glad and others left confused. The downtown location had its last day on St. Patrick's Day. Those needing to get their fix have been driving to the Daphne Dragonfly Tavern location while the Kerr family finishes the new location. An opening day has not been announced but the progress pictures look like it is about ready. Keep an eye on the Dragonfly Foodbar Facebook page for the opening date. – 18874 South Section St., Fairhope.

New Additions

Plane & Level: Opened in Dec., Plane & Level has brought diners a Spanish-inspired tapas menu for brunch, lunch and dinner. The menu ranged from omelets at brunch, smashburgers at lunch and high-end seafood for dinner. The website boasts that the wine served at the restaurants are exclusive to Plane & Level. Who doesn't love a little limited edition? – 61 N. Section St., Fairhope.

Café Viola – Ferus by the Bay announced its closure April 9 and on April 10, Café Viola announced they would open in the Ferus location on South Church Street. While we don't know a lot currently, we do know some of the key players aren't new to the Fairhope food scene. The concept is described as a French creole restaurant and tearoom. The owners, Joe Rider and Maddie Rees (also executive pastry chef),  may sound familiar. Joe Rider and daughter Maddie used to own R Bistro with Misty Rider before it closed  in July 2021.

Chef Daniel Riley is listed as Cafe Viola's executive chef and Dillon Rees as general manager. No timeline for opening has been announced. – 51 South Church Street, Fairhope.
