Garland (Buddy) Braswell

Garland (Buddy) Braswell passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 20, 2023. He was born July 20, 1937, and graduated from Hattiesburg High School and attended Pearl River Junior College on a football scholarship. His team was invited to the Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. He finished his education at the University of Southern Mississippi with a major in business and marketing. and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order.

On June 6, 1958, he married his wife of 65 years, Kay Honeycutt Braswell and moved to the Greater Los Angeles area to work for Nalco Chemical Company. After three years in California, Nalco moved them nearer home to Laurel, Mississippi, for three more years. Faulkner Concrete Pipe Company called, and they moved to Mobile, Alabama, and raised their family there for twenty-one years. Next step was Franklin, Tennessee, with Sherman Industries for three years, and then to Birmingham with SRM for eight years. He retired for two weeks and then was a sales consultant for Vulcan Materials and moved back home to Point Clear. He was a member of the Laurel Country Club, The Country Club of Mobile, and Lakewood Golf Club.

He was a former member of The University of South Alabama Baseball Program, Municipal Park Baseball and Babe Ruth Baseball, Alabama Concrete Industries Association, Alabama Road Builders, Red Elephant Club, and was in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Buddy served on the Board of Prescott House, University of Southern Mississippi Foundation, Point Clear Property Owners Association, and the Point Clear Rotary Club.

He loved his family and friends. They say he never met a stranger and helped and loved people and always wanted to hear about their lives. He loved his Monday Men’s lunch group, golf, boats, traveling, and his passion was motorcycles and races.

Buddy was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Braswell and his beloved son, Andrew Wells Braswell. He is survived by his wife, Kay; his sons, Garland Braswell, Jr. and John Embrey Braswell (Tabitha); his daughter, Kay Honeycutt Braswell Ernest (Cameron) and his daughter-in-law, Ann Brown Braswell; his grandchildren, Andrew Wells Braswell (Sammy), John McPherson Braswell (Lizzie), Emily Braswell Ernest, Martha Cameron Ernest, Garland Wells Braswell, Cassidy Braswell and Katelyn Braswell Warren; great grandchildren; sister, Cyndi Braswell Denham (Michael) and nephew, Christopher Brian Denham (Carol).

Funeral services were held at Buddy’s church, Trinity Presbyterian Church, Wed., Dec. 27, 2023, at 2:00 pm. Interment was at 12:30 pm, family only, and visitation was at 1:00 pm in Trinity Hall.
