The Gulf Shores Dolphins are set to host their first second-round postseason game when the Charles Henderson Trojans come to town on Friday for the AHSAA State Playoffs.

Baldwin County’s other remaining team, the Spanish Fort Toros, will be hitting the road for a rematch with the Pike Road Patriots who ended their season in the first round of last year’s postseason.

Below are deeper details on each playoff matchup with all information retrieved from the Alabama High School Football Historical Society.

Gulf Coast Media will have representatives in Gulf Shores for the lone second-round contest in Baldwin County so follow @GCMSportsAL for immediate updates from the sideline and stay tuned to gulfcoastmedia.com/sports for full coverage.

Class 5A R-2, No. 2 Charles Henderson Trojans (7-3) at R-1, No. 1 Gulf Shores Dolphins (11-0)

For the first time in its fifth postseason appearance, Gulf Shores will host a second-round contest where the Dolphins are now 2-1 in the playoffs. Last year’s 26-21 win over Central-Clay County evened their second-round record to 1-1 entering Friday’s tilt.

Gulf Shores enters outscoring its opponents 39.5-10.0 on average, where the Charles Henderson Trojans are outscoring opponents 35.4-17.3 on average. The Dolphins improved to 7-0 at home so far this season and the Trojans are 3-2 in their away games so far.

The Beauregard Hornets serve as the teams’ lone common opponent where both squads earned victories with a 48-7 win for Gulf Shores last week and a 27-0 victory for Charles Henderson in Week 5.

Last year’s state runner-up, the Trojans will enter the second round on a four-game win streak including last week’s 64-20 win over Marbury to open the playoffs. Charles Henderson will be competing in its fourth straight away game in the second round where it enters with a 2-1 record in that stretch. Overall, the Trojans own a 4-4 record on the road in Round 2.

Class 6A R-1, No. 2 Spanish Fort Toros (9-2) at R-3, No. 1 Pike Road Patriots (9-2)

A pair of nine-win teams with recent postseason history on the line in the second round. What more is needed?

Pike Road handed Spanish Fort its only first-round loss in what is now 16 consecutive appearances last year on its home turf with a 22-21 decision. This year, the Toros will return to face the Patriots who escaped with a 10-9 win over Homewood in the first round.

Also last week, the Spanish Fort defense delivered its first playoff shutout since Nov. 16, 2018, and will enter this week’s contest allowing an average of 13.0 points per game where McGill-Toolen was the last to score double digits in Week 8.

On the other side of the ball, the Toros are scoring an average of 28.5 points per game and finished the regular season with three straight 40-point efforts.

Both teams will enter on streaks where Spanish Fort has won its last seven games in a row and has outscored opponents 33.4-9.1 on average. Pike Road has won all nine of its games consecutively and has outscored opponents 40.6-18.8 on average.

The Patriots are in the playoffs for a fifth straight season and own a 1-1 record at home in the second round with a 1-4 overall mark. The Toros are 7-1 in second-round away games with a 13-1 overall mark.

This season, Pike Road went 5-1 at home and Spanish Fort was 5-0 on the road.
