Early fall with its shorter, cooler and usually sunny days is a perfect time to brush up on fall planting ideas such as what to plant where and how to plant new trees.

For a nominal fee of $10, you can gather knowledge and helpful tips from experienced master gardeners who know what they're talking about.

On Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. til noon, the Baldwin County Master Gardeners will be hosting a fall workshop at the Gulf Coast Regional Research Center at 8300 Highway 104 in Fairhope (1/2 mile east of Highway 98) that is open to the public.

In a gorgeous setting of a healthy pecan grove and lovely budding camellias, a portion of the workshop will be held outdoors. From 9 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. or so, a trio of tree experts-Beau Brodbeck, Jack Rowe and Chris Francis, will share what they know about tree planting and how to care for those trees after they are established. They will include such topics as how to choose the right tree for the right place and how to plant successfully. After the tree is planted, they will address how to mulch, fertilize and water to keep the new tree happy. If, inevitably, some tree damage or disease does occur, you will learn what to look for and how to determine if tree surgery is necessary.

Following a short break, master gardener and Corner Copia Nursery owner, Michelle Johns, will share some valuable gardening tips to remember as you plan for fall color in the garden.

Master gardener, Marilyn Mannhard, will address growing fall vegetables that you will enjoy harvesting and eating in the weeks to come.

Another smart master gardener, Myra Lassere, will inform everyone about how autumn's gifts of composting in your garden will enhance your success.

At 11:15 a.m., Baldwin County's own landscape expert, Fred Nation, will share an entertaining and informative talk on restoring native plants in south Alabama gardening endeavors. Native plants, those which grow and thrive naturally here with minimal care, really will help to insure a beautiful and healthy garden.

So, mark your calendars on Saturday, Oct. 12 for this fun and educational workshop. Wear some comfortable shoes for a pleasant walk outdoors. Light refreshments will be served between the talks. You are sure to learn tips from some experts on how to add beauty and grow healthier plants during this lovely season of bounty.
