Major projects underway in Summerdale

SUMMERDALE - There’s a lot of talk in Summerdale about major projects underway within the town. While some projects are scheduled to take place in the future, Public Works has reported that other projects have already begun.

One of the council’s most asked about projects concerns the clearing of trees to make space for four lighted tennis courts located on 2.5 acres at the intersection of First Street and East Jefferson Street. Current construction is part of the in-kind portion of the project and the town is utilizing its own labor and equipment during the clearing process.

The project was made possible through a grant awarded through the Federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. Governor Kay Ivey announced during 2019 that grants totaling $2.6 million would be awarded to 12 Alabama communities to go towards improving outdoor recreational facilities. Grant recipients are required to equally match the amount of the award with cash or in-kind commitments. Summerdale received a $234,100 grant to go towards tennis courts.

Two waterline projects are scheduled to begin soon, one along Broadway Avenue and the large waterline project that will connect Town of Summerdale lines into existing ECBC pipes. The projects will bring approximately 20 new fire hydrants to the town.

During August, DesignAlabama visited Summerdale and held a charette concerning possible futures for the Tobacco Warehouse. The charette gave citizens the chance to give input and suggestions on how they would like to see the town proceed.

Mayor David Wilson has voiced his desire to see charging stations for electric cars come to the downtown area. He has asked the council to begin brainstorming potential locations for a charging station to be presented at a future meeting.
