Orange Beach Recreation Center, Expect Excellence and Camp Sunshine summer camp announced July 17 that three staff members tested positive for COVID-19. All camp programs and the Recreation Center were closed immediately, and the city had all staff members tested. The 24-hour fitness center and aquatic center have remained open throughout.
Last week, the Orange Beach Recreation Center released the following statement:
“For the health and safety of our community and staff, the Expect Excellence and Camp Sunshine summer Camp programs will not resume for the last week of operations.
“Mayor Tony Kennon and the City Council's main concern is our entire community, students and employees to start the new school year safe and healthy. We believe that this is the best decision for our community for a multitude of reasons including lack of staff to operate to our fullest, and our desire to be fully prepared to offer an outstanding after school program beginning Aug. 12.”
Registration for after-school programs for the 2020-2021 school year opened Friday, July 31. Find information on the city website at https://www.orangebeachal.gov/facilities/recreation-center/expect-excellence.
Recreation Center operations will resume Aug. 10, following minor repairs, renovations and a deep cleaning of the entire facility. Fall hours, including pickleball play times, will be announced before the reopening.
The 24-hour access to the fitness center will remain open. The aquatics center will remain open.
