Relieve stress, lose weight with hypnosis

SUMMERDALE, Alabama — The Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce hosted a Coffee Chat Thursday at the 519 Event Center at L.A. Barbecue.

Julie Nise, owner of Robertsdale Hypnosis for Weight Loss, gave a talk and a short demonstration on hypnosis before a small crowd on Thursday.

“You want to know what hypnosis is? First, we have to talk about what hypnosis isn’t,” she said. “Hypnosis is not sleep. Sleep is sleep. Hypnosis is a trance state.”

Another misconception, Nise said, is that people believe that hypnosis is manipulation.

“Let’s get one thing straight,” she said. “I cannot make you do anything you don’t want to do. There are four types of people on which hypnosis doesn’t work: People with an IQ of under 70; people who have been diagnosed as clinically insane; people who are drunk or under the influence; and people who simply don’t want to be hypnotized.

The fact is that pretty much all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. I’m just there to help you focus your energy and concentration. Once you learn that, you can actually do it yourself.”

That does not mean that someone who is skeptical of hypnosis can’t be hypnotized, she said.

“Everybody is skeptical to one degree or another,” she said. “Everyone is skeptical of things they don’t understand until they actually try it and find out that it works.”

Nise has been a practicing hypnotherapist for more than 15 years, first in Texas, before moving with her husband Jim, a retired former Naval aviator, to Pensacola in 2016. She recently sold her practice in Pensacola and opened Robertsdale Hypnosis for Weight Loss on Alabama 59 this past week.

After starting out working for high-tech medical device companies, she made a mid-career change, got a Master’s Degree in clinical psychology, and eventually became licenses as a therapist in 2003.

She became interested in hypnosis for smoking cessation as an addition to her marriage counseling practice and within a year, expanded into providing hypnosis for weight loss, stress and pain management.

She is certified as a senior trainer for the Master Hypnotist Society and has served as past president. She has also served as a consultant six times on the Dr. Phil Show with Dr Phil McGraw.

“Ultimately, hypnosis is not about weight loss, or quitting smoking or providing some magical cure to relieve stress,” she said. “It’s about focusing your attention on getting rid of things you don’t need. That’s what it’s all about. If you don’t need it, get rid of it.”

Nise offers free consultations and a range of treatment options. She also provides free PTSD treatment for all military personnel and first responders.
