ROBERTSDALE — Residents in Robertsdale are being asked to observe Halloween on Saturday, Oct. 30 this year following a vote of the city council on Monday, Oct. 18.
“I just think it’s a good idea not to observe Halloween on Sunday,” said Council Member Ruthie Campbell, who made the request before the council meeting.
Other municipalities, like Daphne and Spanish Fort, are also observing Halloween on Saturday, Campbell said.
Council Member Sue Cooper seconded the proposal saying she would prefer not to celebrate Halloween on Sunday.
“There are many reasons aside from the obvious that I don’t think Halloween should ever be celebrated on Sunday,” Cooper said. “I just think we should try it, see how it goes, then the next time it comes up we can decide if we should consider it again.”
The council voted unanimously to approve the proposal, despite some misgivings by some council members.
“I’m just not sure how we are going to avoid confusion as to whether or not people should observe Halloween on the actual day or the day before,” Council Member Paul Hollingsworth said.
Campbell and Cooper said it should be announced through the media. Council member Russell Johnson said it could also be announced through local Facebook sites such as “What’s Happening in Robertsdale.”
The city has no official plans to observe Halloween on Saturday or Sunday, officials said. A Halloween Fun Night trunk or treat event was held Thursday, Oct. 21 at the Robertsdale Public Library.
The City of Bay Minette has several events planned for Friday and Saturday including a Trick or Treat drive-thru at the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce on Friday, Oct. 29 at the chamber, 301 McMeans Ave.
A Witches Ride, hosted by the City of Bay Minette, will be Saturday, Oct. 30 at Blackburn Park.
The city will also host the Bay City Spooktacular Auto Show from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 at 611 McMeans Ave.
Trick-or-Treat at the Front Door will be held beginning at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Bay Minette Masonic Lodge.
A Halloween costume party will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Bay Minette Civic Center. Proceeds will benefit the SRO program for the Bay Minette Police Department.
The city will also host a free family movie night beginning at 7 p.m. at Blackburn Park, showing Hocus Pocus. The event is sponsored by Acceptance Insurance.
The Town of Silverhill will host a Trunk-or-Treat from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31 at Silverhill Town Hall, 15965 Silverhill Ave.
The Silverhill Fire Department will be cooking hamburgers and hotdogs. The event will also be held in conjunction with events at the First Baptist Church which is located across the street from town hall.
The Town of Loxley also has no official Halloween observance and did not vote at its meeting Oct. 11 to change its observance from Sunday to Saturday.
