Robert Henry Lokey, Jr., age 69, a resident of Fairhope, Alabama, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2023, after a brief illness. Born in Birmingham and raised in Anniston, Bob graduated high school from Anniston Academy. He then attended Duke University his freshman year, coming home to finish his college career at his beloved University of Alabama. Always passionate about history, Bob initially attended graduate school at the University of Virginia before deciding to follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and pursue a career in medicine. He attended medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, graduating in 1981. He served his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of South Alabama. Afterwards, he completed a Fellowship at USA in Infectious Diseases, where he became a staff member. In 1997 he relocated to Fairhope, Alabama, and began a private practice where he spent the remainder of his career caring for and about his many patients. Bob was a devoted University of Alabama sports fan. He had an amazing ability to recall trivia related to the team, and a contagious desire to share his passion with those he loved. He also enjoyed traveling, art, opera (and music in general), but more than anything loved to spend his afternoons on the back porch with his wife, Jennifer, and their furry family. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Speir Lokey, of Fairhope, Alabama; his sister Carrie Lokey Mauzy (Bill), of Sewanee, Tennessee; mother-in-law Lena Speir; brothers-in-law Holt, John (Stacy), and Bill (Susan) Speir; many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly; and countless other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Henry Lokey and Louise Williams Lokey, and his father-in-law Wyeth Holt Speir, Junior. Bob believed in and lived by the Golden Rule. He was beloved by his patients who said he always made time to listen and never rushed them. Bob took time to truly understand each person he spoke with, both in and away from the office. He could be relied upon in any situation for an understanding comment and a joke. A man equal parts kindness and intelligence, Bob poured himself into his career, his patients, and endlessly into his family. From White Coating his niece in medical school to taking his youngest nephew to his first Alabama game, Bob was a constant presence and a loving, caring, and supportive, but most importantly, fun uncle. He will be missed every day by those left behind. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 12, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Fairhope at 11 AM. Visitation will begin at 10 until time of service.  Interment will follow at Memory Gardens of Fairhope. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to All About Dogs Coastal Rescue: PO Box 476, Magnolia Springs, AL 36555; or the USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute: MCI Office of Development, 650 Clinic Drive, Mobile, AL 36688 or online at https://giving.usaheathsystem.com/supportmci. In the “for” line please specify the donation is to support patient and family needs.
