Ruth Herndon, age 80, resident of Spanish Fort, Alabama, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021.

Ruth was born in Mobile, Alabama, the daughter of J.B. and Rose McConnell. She attended Bishop Toolen High School. She moved to Huntsville, Alabama where she attended Calhoun Community College, becoming a Registered Nurse and working at Huntsville Hospital. Later, she was selected to attend a UAB School of Nursing Program and became one of the first group of Nurse Practitioners in the state. She married Carl Herndon, US Navy Commander and Chaplain and United Methodist Minister, on July 5, 1986. They were blessed with 35 years of marriage until his death in 2019.

Ruth was passionate in her love of animals. As a minister’s wife, she was very active in the United Methodist Church. She had a life-long appreciation of music and film, and a favorite activity was to attend the Mobile symphony orchestra.

She is survived by her only sibling, Ron (Mary Ann) McConnell; five children, Renee Eastman Berger (Greg) of Arlington, Virginia, Kim Eastman of Phoenix, Arizona, Stephanie Herndon (David) Barnett of Gulf Shores, Alabama, Stephen (Sabrina) Herndon of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Allen Herndon of Woodland Hills, California; seven grandchildren, Kolby Devery, Kya Devery, Max Berger, Tyler Barnett, Hunter Herndon, Emrys Herndon, and Kaylee Herndon and one great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, at the Daphne chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Homes. The family will receive friends at 9 a.m.

Interment to follow at Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort.
