BAY MINETTE, Ala. - Coastal Alabama Community College Athletic Director, Daniel Head, announced  the appointment of Brent Shelton as Coastal Alabama Sun Chiefs head baseball coach.
"We are excited about having Brent Shelton on board to lead the Sun Chief baseball program,” he said. “He has a very impressive background in baseball, having coached in high school, junior college, and Division-I levels along with experience as a professional baseball scout."
Prior to joining Coastal Alabama Community College, he was a scout for the Minnesota Twins Baseball franchise in the North/Central Florida region. While scouting for the Twins, Shelton signed Nick Gordon, an MLB first-round draft pick in 2014 and Brian Navaretto, who made his MLB debut last season for the Miami Marlins.
Shelton is a former assistant baseball coach for the University of Southern Mississippi. While coaching there, several student-athletes received academic All-American and All-Conference honors as well as, first-team and second-team All-CUSA athletic honors.
“I am excited for the opportunity to lead the Sun Chiefs baseball program into a new era that will continue our long tradition of excellence,” said Shelton. “I believe a lot of the pieces are in place for this program to compete for conference, state and national championships.”
The Sun Chiefs open up their 2021 fall season on Sept. 10 at Bishop State Community College.
