Spanish Fort alum Jacob Godfrey announced his transfer from New Mexico to join his former offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent at Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday, Dec. 19. Vincent, who won the 2010 state title with the Toros, was introduced as the Warhawks’ newest head coach on Dec. 6.
The pair’s connection goes back to Vincent’s days as the interim head coach of the UAB Blazers when Godfrey impressed at a prospect camp, earned an offer and committed over the summer leading into his senior season. During Spanish Fort’s Week 6 rivalry matchup, with Vincent in attendance, Godfrey helped lead a comeback with a third-quarter touchdown in an 18-15 win over the Daphne Trojans.
Godfrey was a second-team all-state honoree as an athlete his final year with the Toros and went on to represent Spanish Fort in a historic win at the AHSAA North-South All-Star Football Classic. Fellow Toros Yorell Williams (defensive lineman) and Chase Smith (coach) also contributed to the victory.
Potentially the first of a few local dominoes, Godfrey was joined by St. Michael alum Ezra Sexton in playing under Vincent as freshmen in New Mexico this fall. Orange Beach alum Chris Pearson also entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on Dec. 5 with three years of eligibility remaining and subsequently earned an offer from the ULM Warhawks a week later.
An offensive piece who also made his pledge to ULM on Tuesday was quarterback Jim Ogle, a three-star rated prospect who wrapped up his senior season at Jacksonville with 3,095 passing yards and 44 touchdowns. He added 341 rushing yards on 46 carries with 1 touchdown in 13 games.
Ogle’s yards were good enough for seventh in the state on MaxPreps’ leaderboards, one spot ahead of St. Michael freshman Gunner Rivers and his 3,077 yards with 29 touchdowns in 11 games. Ogle had been committed to Troy but flipped his commitment on Dec. 19, just six days after he earned an offer from the Warhawks.
As a freshman with the New Mexico Lobos, Godfrey suited up for 4 games and caught 1 pass for 6 yards against San Jose State. New Mexico ranked 47th in total offense across all FBS programs with 410.6 yards per game which marked an improvement of around 180 yards per game with Vincent calling the plays.
