Steven M. Thames, a native of Mobile, lived in Alamogordo, New Mexico for 20 years and now a resident of Fairhope, passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 16, 2019.

Mr. Thames career spanned 34 years, serving in the military and U.S. Government service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served in World War II in the South Pacific.

He was employed at Brookley AFB and later transferred to Holloman AFB, New Mexico in the aircraft maintenance field.

During his employment at HAFB, he was honored to be sent to various schools including New Mexico State University for engineering, the University of Colorado for management and Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio for logistics. Later he was promoted to Aircraft Maintenance Office at HAFB.

Another opportunity came when he was recommended and selected to be assigned to the 49th Tactical Fighter Wing as technical engineer. This position required him to go on temporary duty in global areas, including the European and Southeast Asia theatres in 1973.

He retired from government civil service and US Air Force status, and moved to Fairhope to be with family. While residing in Alamogordo, New Mexico, he was president of the Lions Club, V.P. of Aerodyne Inc., chairman of the Airport Committee, a member of the Civil Air Patrol, and a life member of Masonic Lodge 24.

In his youth he attended Fairhope High School and was a member of the football team. He was a lifetime member of St. James Episcopal Church and served as a lay reader, chalice bearer and home communion minister.

He was privileged to be a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Abba Temple.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie K. Thames; parents, Steven M. Thames II and Florence G. Thames; daughter, Stephanie T. Rose; grandson, David Kirk Wooley; and nephew, Robert Gilmore.

Mr. Thames is survived by his wife, Connie Brewton Thames; daughters, Jane E. (Gary) Bates of Montgomery, Texas, Valerie Wooley of Knoxville, Tennessee and Linda (Dan) Evon of Fairhope; brother, Dick Thames of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; niece, Dorothy (David) Zieman of Atlanta, Georgia; stepdaughter, Kim (Randy) Blanks of Fairhope; grandson, Rodney Hinote of Atlanta, Georgia, and a special niece and caregiver, Wanda Baber of Mobile.

A celebration of life service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Fairhope on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at 10 a.m.

Inurnment will follow in St. James Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. James Episcopal Church in Fairhope, Alabama or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
