Twin Beech project nearing completion

FAIRHOPE – Twin Beech Road has reopened east of U.S. 98 removing detours for Fairhope High School and Middle School traffic and work on the entire road should be completed in October, city officials said.

Richard Johnson, Fairhope public works director, said the project should be complete within a month with the exception of permanent traffic signals.

“They’re moving along,” Johnsons said. “They’re now working on the west side. We got the east side back open and that’s helped a lot with the school traffic.”

He said the scheduled date for completion is Oct. 11, but if work is not delayed by weather, the project could be done by the end of September.

Work began in June to add a left turn lane on Twin Beech at U.S. 98. The road is near the two schools and the project had been scheduled to be completed by the opening of school in August.

Rain and utility conflicts delayed completion, however requiring school traffic to be detoured for the first part of the academic year, according to a Fairhope city statement.

Johnson said the left turn lane is complete, but the signals must still be put in place.

“If you are traveling west, if you pass Pirate Drive and you’re heading west, they have a temporary stripe. Now there’s multiple lanes there, but the signals have not been changed out yet, so you’re not getting the full effect,” he said.

He said work on the signals will be completed as soon as the supports for the lights are delivered in December or January.
