Time to step forward and support United Way

Posted

The last year has been difficult for many on the Alabama Gulf Coast. In addition to the continued pandemic, Hurricane Sally and Hurricane Zeta hit the region, affecting lives, property, and businesses.

It is at times such as these that the agencies supported by United Way of Baldwin County step forward to help. Whether it’s the Red Cross at the scene of a disaster, food banks distributing sustenance to families or counseling agencies helping people deal with their lives being turned upside down, they step forward when needed.

Often, however, when the need is greatest, the support is harder to find. In difficult times, many who might have supported the work done by these agencies are the ones hit by the setbacks. Instead of providing help, they now find themselves in need of help.

United Way of Baldwin County needs everyone’s help. The new fundraising campaign kicked off this month. Just as they and their agencies step forward to help others in the worst of times, everyone who can needs to do their part to assist their neighbors.

These people are our neighbors. The money raised for United Way of Baldwin County stays in Baldwin County.

It buys food for children to go into backpacks sent home over weekends when they wouldn’t have enough to eat when the school cafeteria is closed. It provides support for people dealing with addictions or domestic abuse. It supports education programs for children and adults. It helps provide shelter for those who find themselves without a place to stay.

People need help throughout the year. It’s not just in times of disaster. Last year, donors raised more than $1 million for United Way. The needs have not diminished.

When hurricanes hit other parts of the Gulf Coast, Baldwin County residents are quick to respond and help. Right now, people around the region are raising money and collecting supplies to send to their neighbors in Louisiana whose lives have been turned upside down by Hurricane Ida.

They know that in the past they have been the ones affected by the storm and that in the future, they will be the ones hit by disaster again. No one is immune from disaster.

The United Way campaign is no different. Friends and neighbors need help. If these people are not someone that we know this time, the next time it could be our families or friends or us.

Baldwin County is a wonderful place to live, but many people, even here, are still in need. More people have lost jobs or businesses in the last year. They need the help of those who can give it.

It is time for everyone to step forward.
