Toros’ offense, defense dominate Bears for region win

Posted

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. -The Spanish Fort Toros were looking for their first win in a real game after two tough losses to two elite programs. They got that chance this Friday night as they traveled to the Robertsdale Golden Bears, who were on a 3-0 start to the season. After a slow first quarter, the Toros dominated the Golden Bears in a road shutout 42-0.

The Golden Bears looked like they were controlling the game by running 15 of the 18 total plays in the first quarter. The Golden Bears had 69 total yards on offense while the Toros had seven yards on three plays in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Toros took control of the game. The Toros scored on a 58-yard touchdown run from running back Johnny Morris III. Robertsdale was starting to drive the ball but a solid sack from outside linebacker Logan Ganey put the Golden Bears out of the red zone and into a situation where they would miss their field goal. One drive later, Toros quarterback Brendon Byrd was able to rush in a 19-yard touchdown. The Toros led 14-0 at halftime.

The Toros opened the second half with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Byrd to wide receiver Mario Montgomery II. Toro running back Zachariah Hixon scored an 11-yard touchdown. The Toros scored again in the third quarter with a 13-yard connection from Byrd to Montgomery again.

Safety Josiah Hixon was able to return a short Robertsdale punt for a 33-yard touchdown to make the score 42-0. The Golden Bears and the Toros ran a series of clock killing plays in the middle of heavy rain for the remaining of the game.

The Toros’ offense accounted for 309 total yards with 270 rushing. Toros running back Johnny Morris III rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.

The defense for the Toros was highly efficient in stopping a dangerous Golden Bears Wing-T offense as to hold Robertsdale to 203 yards. Linebacker Logan Ganey accounted for seven total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. Safety Josiah Hixon accounted for four and a half total tackles on top of the punt return touchdown in the third quarter.  The defensive line, led by Oregon Ducks’ commitment defensive end Christian Burkhalter, was solid to close off running lanes for the Golden Bears running backs.

When asked his defense’s performance, Toros head coach Ben Blackmon said, "I think they played really good and we knew when we were coming in that we were going to have to play responsibility football when you play them there's so much misdirection in their offense that we had to be in the right gap, fit in the right gap we worked solid. Hats off to our defensive coaches, all those guys did a good job of preparing our guys to play and I’m proud of them.”

The Toros will host the Baldwin County High School Tigers (0-3; 0-2) this Friday night. The Golden Bears (3-1; 1-1) will travel to face the Gulf Shores Dolphins (1-3; 0-2) this Friday night.
