MOBILE, Ala. -- The 63rd consecutive “Mobile Metro Championship” is set for May 31- June 2 at the Azalea City Golf Course in Mobile’s beautiful Municipal Park. Considered the championship tournament that crowns the best golfer in Coastal Alabama, the Metro promises to be a barnburner as Mobile linksters go head-to-head with Baldwin County’s best golfers.

The three-day competition starts on Friday with top golfers competing for the Championship Flight. It consists of the low 32 scores and ties plus last year’s defending champion, Sheldon Statkiewicz. To enter you must be at least eighteen years of age and a resident of either county.

The Senior Championship, with defending champion Mel Mueller, gets underway Friday. To enter you must be at least 50 years old and the field is limited to 144 players.

Play on Saturday and Sunday is open to any golfer with an established handicap that meets the age and residence requirements and is flighted accordingly. Lawrence Auer, the Tournament Director, stressed that to play on the weekend you don’t have to qualify, just meet the above requirements.

“This year’s Metro is the week before the State Amateur Championship held at the Turtle Pointe Yacht & CC, so we’re expecting some of the top local players to put on their game face early and come ready to play,” remarked Auer.
“The championship flights look tough and the entries for the regular flights are filling up fast. It promises to be one of the biggest and most challenging Metro’s yet. Another angle is the competition between the counties, it’s fierce.”

The Mobile Metro is one of the area’s three major golf tournaments which include Heron Lake’s Firecracker and the Labor Day Tournament at the Country Club of Mobile.

Cost for the 63rd Metro is $150 for the Championship and Senior’s flights. For more information and rates on the Regular Flight, contact Lawrence Auer, Tournament Director at Azalea City GC in Mobile at 251-209-5150.
