City of Foley votes to sponsor Lemonade Day stand

Posted

FOLEY - The City of Foley council voted to approve a $150 “Safe Stand” sponsorship for the upcoming Lemonade Day on Saturday, May 15. With the sponsorship, a participating local student will be able to set up a lemonade stand in a pre-approved spot in Foley to learn about entrepreneurship, running a business, and customer service. The program is open to students K-5.

“This program teaches youngsters about creating and running a business,” said Mayor Ralph Hellmich. “It basically teaches the fundamentals of creating and managing a business. The way this works is you can sponsor a child and they can set a stand up in Foley anywhere that’s appropriate or that can be approved, and they’ll have a lemonade stand out there.”

The national program started off in our area in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, via the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber. Students who participate receive a Lemonade Day package that includes engaging activities that teach about entrepreneurship. Prior to opening day, students take a trip to Coastal Alabama Community College for lessons in different lemonade recipes. This gives students the chance to get creative as they perfect their special lemonade blends.

Then on May 15, students will put their knowledge to the test when they open their lemonade stands up for business and start receiving customers. With their chaperone’s assistance, students will then engage customers, sell their products, and handle the cash-exchange. Students even have the option of taking out a loan from a bank, then paying back the loan with interest.

Any business can sponsor a lemonade stand. The stands can be placed in any location within the city that has been approved and will receive foot traffic. Even if a sponsor’s business location isn’t optimal for a stand, they can still sponsor a stand to be set up elsewhere in the city. The City of Foley has discussed a stand going up at the Coastal Alabama Farmers’ and Fishermen’s Market.

“It’s a worthwhile program that’s something good for the City of Foley to support,” said Hellmich. “It’s a very early program for business development for our students.”
