DAPHNE, Ala. – For the third year in a row, the Jubilee Cup trophy game went down to the last play from scrimmage. For the third year, the Pirates also claimed the cup by a margin of three points.

Trailing the Trojans from the opening kickoff and still behind 35-31, the Pirates took the lead when quarterback Riley Leonard found Grant Phyfer open for a 3-yard TD pass and the lead with 7.8 seconds left.

Fairhope was offsides on the ensuing squib-style kickoff and decided to kick it deep on the replay. Ja’Quan Myles took the ball near his 10 and found a seam into Fairhope territory on the home sideline. He nearly got by the last FHS defenders but was forced out near the Pirates’ 35-yard line as time expired.

Both teams scored three touchdowns in the first half, but DHS led 21-18 at the break aided by missed and blocked extra-point attempts by FHS. The Trojans extended the lead to 28-18 on a 7-yard TD run by Tyler Bradley. But Leonard then scored on a 9-yard keeper to keep the difference of three points with DHS leading 28-25 and 6:35 left on the clock.

The Trojans extended their lead to 10 points again (35-25) when Daphne quarterback Trent Battle’s pass to Darius Johnson went 71-yards to score. The Pirates answered with a 69-yard drive that led to a 6-yard TD pass from Leonard to Nolan Myers with 4:04 and a 35-32 score on the board. The final scoring drive for Fairhope began with 1:18 left in regulation.

Earlier in the game Cyline Koen scored two rushing TDs for Fairhope from inside the five. For Daphne, Bradley also had a rushing TD of 2 yards and Bryson Cleveland ran a kickoff return 88 yards for a Trojan touchdown. Daphne defensive back Braxton Jordan intercepted Leonard on one drive in the first half. Leonard finished the night with four touchdowns, two rushing, two passing, one INT. Daphne High, which opened in 1989 due to growth on the Eastern Shore, leads in the Jubilee Cup overall series 23-8.

At halftime, Daphne senior Mya Jo Williams was named 2019 Homecoming Queen.

This Friday, the Pirates (3-3) travel to Baker in Class 7A, Region 1 play. Daphne (1-4) travels to Bay Minette to face the Baldwin County Tigers in Class 6A, Region 1 play.
