Foley Beautification Committee creating butterfly garden near Dog Park

FOLEY - The Foley Beautification Committee is creating a second butterfly garden on the southside of the Foley Dog Park. The exact location had several limbs fall due to Hurricane Sally, and has been cleared to make way for the new butterfly garden. Chad Watkins with WAS Design has developed preliminary designs for the garden, which will also include crushed granite walking paths, plants and decorative boulders.

The entire project will cost the Beautification Committee approximately $2,400. Funds will be put towards the crushed granite and decorative boulders, with other project elements donated, and will come from the committee’s special project account.

Mayor Ralph Hellmich says future city projects could see larger butterfly gardens being constructed in other areas, including Graham Creek.

“Monarch butterflies are getting on the reduced side because their habitat has been impacted, so by doing these gardens hopefully it might help a little bit,” said Hellmich.

The first butterfly garden created by the Beautification Committee is located on the Wilbourne Rose Trail, behind the solar panels. A special memorial sign is planned for the future, dedicated to Terry Underwood, a supporter of the butterfly gardens who built several at the local schools. The plants for the first garden were planted by City Horticulturalist John Graham and his team. The same team will oversee the planting at the new garden.

Take a walk along the Wilbourne Rose Trail today to view the butterfly garden, and keep a lookout in the future for the new garden beside the Dog Park.
