Perry Vernal Lowery Jr, formerly of Fairhope, passed away Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, at the age of 91.

Perry was born Dec. 28, 1929, in Mobile, Alabama. He lived most of his life in Fairhope with his wife, Mollie Carpenter Lowery until her passing in 2016.

He lettered in varsity sports at UMS for six straight years. He was inducted into UMS’ Hall of Fame and was titled a Football High School All American. His athleticism earned him a scholarship to the University of Southern Mississippi where he attained his bachelor’s degree. Later, he earned a master’s degree in education from the University of South Alabama. He was a paratrooper in the ARMY serving as radio operator on the Czech German Border post World War II.

Upon conclusion of his ARMY service, he became an educator teaching and coaching at UMS in the late 50’s and early 60’s, and later at Fairhope High School from the mid 60’s through the 90’s. He was well regarded by faculty and students. He was called “Coach” by most and was inducted into the Fairhope High School Hall of fame for his football coaching success. His hobbies were sailing, hunting, and fishing.

Perry is survived by his sons, Tony A. Lowery, Ph.D. of Fairhope and David A. Lowery of Folsom, LA; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; sister, Joyce King of Mobile; and many other relatives and friends. He will be missed.

Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 11, 2021, at Memorial Gardens of Fairhope.
