Steve Douglas Mitchell, 90, of Bay Minette, AL, passed away on March 16, 2021 at William F. Green Veterans Home in Bay Minette. He was born in Corner, AL, on July 21, 1930, son of the late Grady and Vera Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Brandon. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara Rauschenberg Mitchell and his children, Jeannine Noonan (George) and Forrest Steven Mitchell (Melissa). His is also survived by four grandchildren, George Noonan, III (Amanda Fernandez), Campbell McMillan Noonan (Hannah Stone), Adam Mitchell (Libby Chambliss) and Ben Mitchell; three great grandchildren, George IV, Thomas, and Katherine Noonan. After graduating in journalism from the University of Alabama and serving in the United States Army, Mr. Mitchell spent 46 years as a journalist. Serving as a reporter in Birmingham during the turbulent 1960’s, he and his young family moved to Bay Minette in 1966, taking a position as Editor of the Baldwin Times where he won numerous awards for journalistic excellence. He completed his newspaper career as a Regional Editor for The Mobile Register. Mitchell was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church and active in his community, serving as President of the Kiwanis Club, leading the effort to help found the Baldwin County Senior Volunteer Program, a senior volunteer agency serving numerous Baldwin organizations. Mr. Mitchell’s most joyous moments were spending time with his grandchildren. A memorial service was held on Sunday, March 21st at the First United Methodist Church in Bay Minette. The Reverend Marvin Hamilton officiated. Pallbearers were his four grandsons George Noonan, Campbell Noonan, Adam Mitchell and Ben Mitchell, Daniel Godwin, and Steven Irvin. Honorary pallbearers are Ed Irvin, Dody Rhodes, Ricky Rhodes, and Roy McBryar. Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund at First United Methodist Church in Bay Minette (P.O. Box 338, Bay Minette, AL 36507). The family would like to thank the staff at William F. Green Veterans Home for their outstanding dedication in providing healthcare services for their residents and families.
