ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The Robertsdale High School Alumni Association hosted its third Forks & Spoons tasting spree on Friday, Oct. 11 at the PZK Hall.

“This is something we used to do every year,” said Evelyn Lowery, retired educator and organizer of the event when interviewed prior to event’s revival in 2017.

The Friends of the Robertsdale Library would host the tasting spree as a fundraiser for the Alumni Association and cooks from all across the RHS alumni family would share dishes and recipes. There was even a cookbook, which was hand-typed by RHS alumnus Jimmy Gilbert.

It was that cookbook that was the inspiration for the revival of the event, Lowery said.

“Every year (toward the end of the school year) we hold an Alumni Tea where we give out scholarships to RHS students,” Lowery said. “We were looking for something else we could do as a fundraiser and somebody had a copy of an old cookbook from 1981. That was the inspiration for this event.”

This year’s event focused on casseroles and featured a wide variety of dishes cooked by RHS alumni, among others. Dishes included seven layer salad by Paulette Wilson; sweet potato casserole by Sue Cooper; squash casserole by Elaine Wiley; sweet potato casserole by Magnolia Blossom Café; potato casserole by Delores Sturma; broccoli, cheese and rice casserole by Sharon Hadley of Greer’s; corn casserole by Evelyn Lowery; country ham and corn casserole by Evelyn Lowery; mac and cheese casserole by Mama Lou’s; breakfast casserole by Scott Miller; turkey tetrazzini casserole by Erin Childress Salyers of Farm Fresh Meats; a barbecue casserole by L.A. Barbecue; squash casserole by Doris Stapleton; chicken casserole by Stephanie Kroll; vegetable lasagna by the Robertsdale Senior Center; tuna casseroles by Sandra Hill; chicken divan by Sandra Clark; Aunt Sarah’s chicken poppyseed casserole; and a casserole by Maw Maw’s Country Market.

There was also pulled pork from Buster’s Southern Pit BBQ and a variety of desserts including frozen fruit dessert by Rose Davis; cake and cupcakes by Betty King; peach cobbler by Diane Foster and Rita Turner; banana nut bread by Mary Frances Boykin; and sweet potato pecan pie by Paige Boykin.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Alumni Association to help fund scholarships for local school students. The Association will host its Alumni Tea in March at the Baldwin County Coliseum, which is also a fundraiser for local scholarships.
