Voters head to polls for run-off elections July 14

FOLEY, Alabama — Run-off elections, originally set for March 18, will be held Tuesday, July 14 for three Republican spots and one Democratic spot on the November ballot.

Both Democrat and Republican candidates will square off for nominations for the U.S. House of Representatives, Alabama District 1 Congressional seat currently held by Bradley Byrne.

Jerry Carl will face off against Bill Hightower for the Republican nomination while James Averhart and Kiani A. Garndner will face off for the Democratic nomination.

Former Secretary of State Jeff Sessions will also be in a runoff on Tuesday for his former U.S. Senate seat, against former Auburn football coach and political newcomer Tommy Tuberville. Whoever wins the nomination will face incumbent Democrat Doug Jones in November.

The Republican ballot will also include a runoff for Court of Criminal Appeals Judge Place 2 between Will Smith and incumbent Beth Kellum.

Baldwin County Election coordinator Violetta Smith said all polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday. If you voted in the March 3 primary election, you can only participate in the run-off for the party in which you voted in the primary, Smith said. If you did not vote in the primary, you can choose which run-off in which to participate.

New voters, voters who submitted a change of address or voters whose precinct has changed since the last election should have received a card in the mail from the Baldwin County Board of Registrars with their polling location, Smith said. Otherwise, voters should go by the last place they voted.

If you are unclear where you need to vote, you can call the Board of Registrars office at 251-937-0305 (Bay Minette); 251-990-4514, extension 2617 (Fairhope); or 251-972-6877, extension 2859 (Foley).

Social distancing and sanitation guidelines should be enforced at each polling location.
