The Baldwin County Historical Society (BCHS) convenes quarterly at various venues across Baldwin County, fostering engagement with the region's rich heritage.
The upcoming Spring meeting is scheduled to take place in Fairhope on Sunday afternoon, April 21, at the Fairhope Friends Meeting Quakers. Located at 9261 Fairhope Avenue, Fairhope, the meeting will begin at 2 p.m. with registration/sign-in and social time, followed by the business meeting and program at 2:30 p.m.
This quarter's program features Bob Niemala as the keynote speaker, who will delve into the "History of the Fairhope Friends." Niemala's presentation promises to explore the origins and evolution of the Fairhope Friends community, tracing its roots back to the inaugural preparative Meeting of Friends held on February 21, 1917, at Orange Grove, just east of Fairhope. Attendees will have the opportunity to gain insights into the factors that drew Quakers from various states to Fairhope, including the mild climate, affordable land and unique tax incentives.
Following Niemala's presentation, Dr. Carol Motley and Tim Vaughan will lead a Q&A session accompanied by photos, providing attendees with an interactive platform to delve deeper into the topics discussed.
The event emphasizes inclusivity, welcoming both members and non-members of the BCHS. Membership is not a prerequisite for attendance at programs and meetings, highlighting the BCHS's commitment to fostering community engagement and preserving local history.
Parking will be available on the grounds of the Fairhope Friends Meeting Place, although space may be limited. Carpooling is encouraged to facilitate ease of access.
