The St. Michael Cardinals closed their season with a bang and a 55-54 win over the T.R. Miller Tigers in overtime. With a bye in Week 11, St. Michael finished the season 6-4 overall and 5-2 in Class 4A Region 1 for the No. 4 seed in the playoffs and its best region record in program history.

The winning play came on a 2-point conversion pass from sophomore receiver Brody Jones to senior receiver Braxton Mills. Although the catch was originally ruled an incomplete pass due to a bobble, the officials eventually overturned the call and the Cardinals walked off with a one-point edge.

The victory set a scoring record for the St. Michael program after it twice tied the previous record of 49 points this season. It also tied a school record as the Cardinals’ sixth win of the season after a 6-3 campaign in head coach Philip Rivers’ first year at the helm in 2021.

Senior running back Martin Corte surpassed his previous season total of 5 rushing touchdowns with a 6-touchdown effort on the ground to go along with 188 rushing yards on 27 carries as well as 7 catches for 45 receiving yards.

Freshman quarterback Gunner Rivers finished 23-of-31 passing for 262 yards to help retain the state lead for passing yards according to MaxPreps stats. On the 10-game season, Rivers registered 2,561 passing yards on 314 completions with 26 touchdowns against 3 interceptions. Junior Preston Lancaster from Tuscaloosa Academy ranked second as of Monday with 2,485 passing yards through nine games.

In the program’s 24th varsity season, Gulf Shores will go into the playoffs as a region champion for the first time.

Senior Ronnie Royal ran for two touchdowns as part of a 53-yard effort on the ground to complement a 37-yard touchdown pass to junior Blaize Thomas. Freshman quarterback Judson Harris finished 4-of-8 passing for 127 yards with a 70-yard touchdown to senior Braden Jackson as well as collected 64 rushing yards on 5 carries with a touchdown.

Sophomore Landon Everett (8 tackles), senior Kingston Lowe (7 tackles, 2 tackles for loss) and junior Jamichael Garrett (6 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery) helped lead the Dolphin defense that has allowed an average of 9.1 points per game.
