Bay Minette library uses Poarch Creek grant to gift 150 kids books

The Bay Minette Public Library handed out 150 books to children thanks to an Endowment Grant from the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.

The library distributed the books, along with a library tote, at the annual back-to-school bash sponsored by The Chosen Youth Outreach Ministry. This event brings together local businesses and organizations for a school supplies giveaway event, complete with entertainment and refreshments.

"I love participating in this event," said Joanna Bailey, director of Library Services. "It's the perfect time to see children and their parents or guardians and encourage them to get a library card if they don't already have one. This year, we included a library card application in each tote bag to make it easier for them."

The library has participated in the back-to-school bash for several years and has received the grant each year to help fund the project.

"It is so important for children to be read aloud to by a parent or guardian and to read themselves as they grow. Not only does it help with their academics, it also expands their vocabulary and encourages them to use their imagination. A child who reads becomes a child who thinks for themselves."

The Bay Minette Public Library is always seeking ways to get books in the hands of readers of all ages. Free Little Libraries have been set up in nine locations all over the North Baldwin area to provide easy access to readers. These mini libraries are stocked full of books that are free for the taking. The concept is simple: take what you want and leave behind what you can.

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is also available to children from birth up to 5 years old in north Baldwin thanks to the Bay Minette Public Library. The program sends a book free of charge through the mail each month to the child. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to read to their children from the curated titles. The Dollywood Foundation covers the overhead costs associated with the program. The library's only financial responsibility is the at-cost books and mailing expenses.

Bailey said for many people, books are a luxury that not everyone can afford and that's why it is so important to make books accessible.

"Giving a child a book of their very own is incredibly special," she said. "Reading opens so many doors for children, and we want to create lifelong readers. Making books readily available to children in our community is a top priority."
