FOLEY — Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Jalyn Stout recorded her 14th triple-double of the year to lead Coastal Carolina to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship for the third time in the program’s history on Sunday, Nov. 19, at the Foley Event Center.
It marked the conference’s third championship awarded in Foley after cross country and women’s soccer crowned winners earlier this fall. Women's golf is scheduled to host its championship in April 2024 at Lakewood Golf Club in Point Clear.
The Chanticleers, who also claimed the SBC regular-season title, defeated James Madison 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 30-28, 25-19) to earn the Sun Belt’s automatic bid to the NCAA Volleyball Championship. Coastal Carolina (22-9) will be featured on the 2023 NCAA Volleyball Selection Show on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 5 p.m. on ESPN.
Stout, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer, also became the NCAA Division I record holder for triple-doubles in a single season after consecutive triple-doubles to close the tournament.
In the championship match, Stout finished with 28 assists, 22 kills and 16 digs. Her teammate and Sun Belt Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year Jasmine Rivest tallied her second double-double of the tournament with 21 kills and 16 digs. Rivest was also recognized on the All-Tournament Team.
Agata Lesiak added 12 kills for the Chanticleers with a block assist to earn All-Tournament Team accolades. Libero Sydney Lewis totaled a match-high 23 digs as Valentina Varani added four block assists with four kills.
Coastal Carolina out-dug James Madison 74-66. The Chanticleers also led in kills 72-59 and hitting percentage .327-.253. The Dukes led in total blocks 8-7 and service aces 7-4.
James Madison (21-9) was led by First-Team All-Conference member Miëtte Veldman who recorded 24 kills, nine digs and a block assist. All-Tournament Team member Sophie Davis tallied six total blocks in the match with six kills. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by libero Jaydyn Clemmer who picked up a pair of service aces and a team-high 21 digs.
