Out of the six soccer teams from Baldwin County that went to the state championships in Huntsville last weekend, two came out as repeat champions, three ended as runners-up and one finished in the semifinals of their respective brackets.

The boys’ teams from Daphne (Class 7A) and Bayside Academy (Class 4A), returned with another Blue Map trophy where Noah Miller and Joey Jones were named MVPs of the state tournament.

The Trojans claimed a second straight title with a 3-1 win over Huntsville after all their scoring came in the second half. Miller potted two goals within 11:44 of each other on assists from Patrick McCallister and Alex Potier and in between, William Alves scored on a rebounded save just over a minute before the final goal.

After the Admirals won three consecutive championships on the Class 1A-3A circuit, they were competitive balance factored into Class 4A and didn’t miss a beat en route to the team’s fifth Blue Map trophy with a 3-1 win over Westbrook Christian.

Jones assisted on the first goal when Tipton Smith headed home a free kick and then scored twice in the second half, one just over a minute into the second half and the other in the final two minutes of the contest. Luke Ferguson, who went to represent Bayside Academy at the state golf tournament Monday, and Ballard Sweat collected assists on the goals.

In their program’s first time at the state soccer finals, both teams from Gulf Shores (Class 5A) as well as St. Michael Catholic’s (Class 4A) girls’ team garnered Red Map trophies as state runners-up.

The Cardinals’ contest against Westminster Christian needed penalty kicks to decide a winner after Kathryn Ford delivered the equalizing goal in the final 13 minutes of regulation. In the shootout, the Wildcats beat St. Michael to three goals in the best-of-five format and walked off champions in their first time in the finals also. The Cardinals earned their title spot with an 8-0 semifinal win over American Christian after Maddie Key came through with a buzzer-beating goal in the quarterfinals.

The Dolphin girls’ team fell in a 9-4 battle with Springville where the scoring started in the first five minutes and didn’t relent until the final two minutes. Gulf Shores senior Jensen Ward registered two goals within 2:04 of each other before Reese Wood and Calista Sweet found the back of the net in the second half. The Tigers collected seven unanswered goals in what was their first time in the finals as well.

The Dolphin boys’ team found the end of the road in an 8-1 defeat to John Carroll. Gulf Shores junior Talan Galvan provided the tally that marked his 52nd goal of the season to go along with 17 assists. The goal came on an assist from Jasper Calvert’s corner kick just before halftime and the Dolphins clinched their first finals appearance with a 5-0 semifinal win over Elmore County thanks to five different goal scorers.

After it earned a Red Map trophy in last year’s Class 7A state bracket, the Fairhope girls’ soccer team fell shy of returning to the title match following a 4-0 semifinal loss to Auburn. The Pirates hadn’t allowed a goal in their previous two playoff games but the Tigers potted two goals in each half to advance. Goalkeeper Peyton Davis collected 11 saves in net for Fairhope.
