Gulf Shores Police are investigating after an altercation led to one person being shot in the leg at Gulf Place in Gulf Shores last night.

A suspect was taken into custody at the Gulf Shores Walmart Supercenter, which is over one mile from where the shooting occurred.

Courtney Scott, who was visiting Gulf Shores with her family for spring break from Verbena, shared Gulf Coast Media’s post last night and commented:

“Talking about scared!! I’ll never come back here on spring break! I thought me and my kids and nieces were about to be taken out as we were rushed out of Walmart and drones flying over. The shooting happened right down from our hotel! I will not sleep well tonight.”

According to another Facebook post, Shaunda Hudgins, of Millbrook, her son who is visiting the beach with his girlfriend and her family called to let her know he was OK.

“Mom, we are all OK, but there was a shooting at The Hangout…we were about to go to our table and everything went crazy and people were running everywhere,” he told her.

The incident happened close to The Hangout in Gulf Shores, prompting the restaurant to make a post on social media, stating:

“Gulf Shores Police Department is on the scene of a shooting that took place earlier this evening at the intersection of Hwy. 59 and Beach Hwy. Suspect(s) and victim(s) were not at The Hangout. All Hangout patrons are safe, and we await further details from GSPD.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim(s).”

One year ago, on March 28, 2023, a 21-year-old Fairhope man was arrested after a fight in the same area that led to the shooting of a teenage boy. As of February, he was still in custody and faces several charges, including attempted murder and reckless endangerment. On Feb. 28, his request to have his bond lowered from $1 million to $200,000 was granted by Judge Scott Taylor.

This week is spring break for Baldwin County Public Schools.

This is a developing story. Gulf Coast Media is awaiting information from GPD and will update as more information becomes available.
