A new nonprofit is fundraising to bring a haven for healing and companionship for veterans to Robertsdale.

Warrior Legacy Ranch recently announced the commencement of its flagship project, aimed at providing support to military veterans through a sanctuary designed to foster mental health and prevent suicide.

"Warrior Legacy Ranch provides a space for veterans to reflect on their military service, revisit memories and gain a sense of closure," said Patrick Jump, president of Warrior Legacy Ranch. "We are excited to include all that Baldwin County has to offer in the process of improving mental health with the heroes that have served this country."

The project centers on the organization's mission to reunite veterans with their unit members in a single location. This initiative aims to enhance mental health and reduce veteran suicide rates by providing a supportive environment for small unit reunions.

The inception of Warrior Legacy Ranch was inspired by challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2020, two Marine veterans from the 1st Battalion 6th Marine Regiment CAAT Platoon of 2004 initiated recurring Zoom calls, leading to a heartfelt physical reunion after nearly 17 years of separation. This reunion not only strengthened their bonds but also fostered connections among their spouses, leading to the establishment of a support group for veterans' spouses across different states.

However, the reunion posed challenges, including securing an Airbnb large enough to accommodate 35 people, costing $1,500 per night. Recognizing the financial constraints faced by many veterans, the idea of Warrior Legacy Ranch was born to ensure all veterans have access to supportive reunions without financial burdens.

Drawing inspiration from successful initiatives led by other veteran nonprofits, Warrior Legacy Ranch emphasizes the importance of group settings in veteran support. The ranch will feature a building capable of accommodating up to 40 individuals. The facility will include handicap-accessible amenities, communal living and dining areas and a fully-equipped kitchen to encourage camaraderie and facilitate group gatherings. Additionally, ample outdoor areas dedicated to recreational activities and entertainment will complement the indoor facilities.

Jump said the organization is currently in the fundraising phase to finance the construction of the 70-by-100-foot steel building located at 22163 Creekfront Drive in Robertsdale. The organization acquired the 20.16-acre land at the end of 2023.
