A strong upperclassman presence looks to lead the Makos back to the playoffs

After all these years, including 17 as a head coach, Jamey DuBose still loves going to work. And with a new school in Orange Beach that’s only gaining football experience, Class 4A Region 1 could be in trouble for a while.

“A lot of people think it’s a wonderful place to live, but the best thing (about my job) is going to football practice and being around the 60 kids I get to be around every day and that’s the reason I’m still coaching right now,” DuBose said at Gulf Coast Media Day July 27. “I’m one of those guys that could walk away from the game and retire today but I love being around this group.”

This group includes a heavy upperclassman presence that still has a bad taste in their mouths from how last year finished. Now, with a full offseason with DuBose and the coaching staff, the squad has more of a family feel compared to previous years and will look to rely on that to construct another road to the playoffs.

Key Storylines

-The Makos are looking for a third straight home playoff game in their second year under head coach Jamey DuBose, fourth year of varsity competition.

-After graduating 21 seniors from last year’s team, 24 upperclassmen (11 seniors) represent nearly half of the 60-man roster.

Top Quote from Media Day
“I think this year’s team is going to be a team that has been different than what I’ve ever had. It’s a fun team to be around, these guys are really eager to learn, eager to work hard every day they show up. I think right now I’m interested to see more as we get into pads coming on in the fall camp, but I think this group has something to prove; that’s what’s been so fun about it going back to January. I don’t know, this group has just been different, I enjoy being around these guys every day.”
