The second-annual Prep Baseball Report South Alabama Showdown closed with a bang on Saturday where 10 of the 12 games played in Robertsdale, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach reached double digits. Half of those also resulted in wins for Baldwin County Teams.

On the weekend, Fairhope and Gulf Shores were the local clubhouse leaders with three wins apiece. Baldwin County, Bayside Academy, Orange Beach, Spanish Fort and Robertsdale all recorded one win in South Alabama Showdown contests played over Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Austin Sharp, PBR’s Scouting Director for Alabama, said on Monday’s weekly podcast that all three host sites were exceptional facilities that helped produce high-quality competition.

Saturday’s finale was highlighted by a 13-2 win for Spanish Fort and a 12-2 win for Fairhope at the Orange Beach Sportsplex where recent stadium upgrades provided more field-level viewing access.

“Orange Beach, they’ve got a good thing going over there; a brand-new playing surface, they tore down their dugouts and pushed them down and got brand-new dugouts,” Sharp said. “Where the dugouts were, on the first-base side it’s a hospitality place where they’ll bring sponsors, have catered food but there are tables you can stand at and watch the game. … I always liked how their stands were set up originally so it’s a cool environment.”

The second-annual event hosted in Baldwin County capped the first week of play on the baseball diamonds and Monday’s podcast also revealed a new edition of top-10 rankings for each AHSAA classification.

The Bayside Academy Admirals were the top-ranked team in Class 4A, the Gulf Shores Dolphins checked in at No. 4 in Class 5A, the Spanish Fort Toros were the No. 9 team in Class 6A and the Bayshore Christian Eagles were ranked No. 10 in Class 2A.
