Help the men in your life live happier, healthier, longer lives

In short, men are dying too soon.

Our brothers, fathers, cousins and friends are being taken from our lives due to largely preventable causes.

The Movember foundation is aiming to change the face of men's health by raising funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer, as well as mental health and suicide, by way of the upper lip.

This is the eighth year I've ditched my beard in an effort to advocate for men's health, and this time around I come bearing five easy ways men can take the first steps toward living happier, healthier — and longer — lives.

1. Spend time with people who make you feel good

It may seem simple, but just sharing space with people who make you feel good can be beneficial. Stay connected, catch up regularly and make the time. It's just as beneficial for them as it is for you.

2. Talk, more
When you're hanging out, don't shy away from talking about or listening to the hard stuff. Those people are close to you for a reason, lean on them when you need the help.

3. Know the numbers
At 50 years old, you should be talking to your doctor about prostate cancer. With a family history the cancer, that conversation should come around 45.

4. Know Thy Nuts and Bolts
Get to know what's normal for your body and check regularly so you'll know when things need professional help.

5. Move, more
Add more physical activity and do more of what makes you feel good. It's as easy as parking farther away from the store or taking the stairs instead of an elevator. Take the few extra steps, your body — and heart — will thank you.
