Municipalities swear in new council members, re-establish guides for next four years

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The municipalities of Robertsdale, Loxley and Silverhill held organizational meetings and swearing in ceremonies Nov. 7 for council members to serve their respective areas over the next four years.

Silverhill was the only council to welcome new members at its meeting Nov. 7.

In municipal elections held in August, former town council member Steve Brooks defeated educator Rebel Hill to win the Place 5 seat, which was vacated by longtime council member Shirley Stephens.

Stephens completed her third term in office after a narrow defeat in the town’s mayoral race to incumbent Tim Wilson in August.

Council members Bert Jones (Place 2) and Mike Allegri Jr. (Place 1) also chose not to seek re-election in the August elections with former superintendent of utilities Steve Williams defeating Alan Norden for the Place 2 slot and Tonie Norden winning the Place 1 spot unopposed. Incumbents Jared Lyles, Place 3 and Wayne Gruenloh, Place 4, were elected unopposed.

Also at Monday’s meeting, Silverhill re-appointed Judge Ken Raines as the town’s municipal judge; re-appointed Jared Lyles as mayor pro tem; appointed Mary deLaunay as the town’s representative to the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce; set meeting times for the first and third Mondays of every month, work session begins at 6 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 6:30; and passed a resolution for bank depositories.

Council member Steve Brooks was not present at the Nov. 7 meeting and will be sworn in at the council’s next meeting Nov. 21.

In Robertsdale, Mayor Charles Murphy was sworn in for his seventh term in office after defeating challenger Roger Booth in the August municipal election.

Brent Kendrick was the only other council member to face opposition, defeating businessman Tim Brown for the Place 4 seat.

Robertsdale council members Joe Kitchens, Place 1; Sue Cooper, Place 2; Ruthie Campbell, Place 3 and Paul Hollingsworth, Place, were all elected unopposed in August.

At the Nov. 7 meeting, Joe Kitchens was re-appointed as mayor pro tem and will serve as the city’s representative for the Planning Commission; Sue Cooper was appointed to the Library Board and Park & Street Tree Committee; Ruthie Campbell was also appointed to the Park & Street Tree Committee; and Brent Kendrick was appointed to the Industrial Development Board.

David Kilcrease was appointed as the city employee to the Planning Commission. Other appointments were: Shannon Burkett, city clerk; Brad Kendrick, chief of police; Ken Raines, city attorney and prosecutor; Buddy Brackin, city judge.

Robertsdale also designated its financial depositor during the organizational meeting.

The council also voted to donate $500 to the Robertsdale High School dance team and voted to allow the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce use of the Baldwin County Coliseum for four dates, two in January for the Chamber’s Annual Banquet and two in July for the Chamber’s Annual Flavors of the South event.

Jeffrey Knight was the only council member in Loxley to face opposition in August, defeating challenger William Ervin for the Place 2 seat.

Mayor Billy Middleton and council members Richard Lee Wilson, Place 1; Katherine Breeden, Place 3; Mayor Pro Tem Richard Teal, Place 4; and Kasey Childress, Place 5; retained their seats with no opposition in Loxley.

Loxley held a special organizational meeting Nov. 7, appointing Richard Team as mayor pro tem and setting the date and time for council meetings and work sessions and adopting rules of procedure and Roberts Rules of Order.

Middleton also announced committee appointments including: Richard Teal, Police Department; Parks & Recreation; Public Works; Check Signing; Casey Childress, Police Department; Parks & Recreation; Building Department; Beautification; Lee Wilson, Fire Department; Building Department; Business License; Health Department; Jeff Knight, Fire Department; Public Works; Administration; Business License; Katherine Breeden, Administration; Beautification; Health; Check Signing.

The council also:

• Ratified the use of present depositories for municipal funds.

• Re-appointed the following positions to four-year terms, town clerk/treasurer, Melissa Lawrence; building inspector, Jake Traweek; police chief, John “Chip” Cason; prosecutor, Haymes Snedeker; municipal judge, Michael Dassinger; town attorney, Shawn Alves, representing Stone, Grenade and Crosby.

• Donated $500 to the RHS dance team.

• Renewed the gym floor ad for 2016-17 at a cost of $500.

• Financed four trucks for the Utility Department with United Bank.

• Tabled action on a financial agreement for the town’s cable option.

The council did not hold its regularly scheduled meeting on Nov. 14. The council will hold a work session beginning at 6 p.m. Nov. 28 with its next regular meeting scheduled for Dec. 12.
