Baldwin County basketball teams took one step closer to the state finals set for the end of the month in Birmingham.

Five squads entered this weekend’s sub-regional round as area champions and four more earned runner-up finishes to earn their spot in the first round of the state tournament.

Gulf Shores’ girls’ team and Fairhope’s boys’ team extended area championship streaks where the Dolphins have now won six in a row and the Pirates have collected the last five area titles consecutively. Gulf Shores took down B.C. Rain 52-24 and Fairhope beat Daphne 74-47.

Foley’s girls’ team went on the road and earned their second consecutive Class 7A Area 2 title with a 34-32 win over the Daphne Trojans. The Lions avenged a pair of regular-season losses to the Trojans and took the top seed into the next round.

Daphne and Spanish Fort become the only two local teams to send both girls’ and boys’ teams to the sub-regional round.

Under coaches in their first year with a new squad, Orange Beach’s girls’ team and Spanish Fort’s boys’ team didn’t miss a beat and also collected area titles. The Makos, now led by Mike Chase from Spain Park, took down UMS-Wright 42-38 and the Toros, now led by Chad Applin from Faith Academy, beat McGill-Toolen 68-42.

Bayside Academy’s boys’ team and Spanish Fort’s girls’ team also collected runner-up finishes in their respective area brackets. Each will hit the road for the first round of the state tournament this weekend.
