Gulf Shores and Spanish Fort left no doubts in their region-opening games Friday night where neither team allowed their opponents to register points on the scoreboard. The Dolphins took down Citronelle 31-0 and the Toros beat Blount 44-0.

In non-region action, the Bayside Academy Admirals (38-6 over Pike Lib) and St. Michael Cardinals (49-18 over Chickasaw) earned big victories in Week 2 which sets up a collision course for the teams’ Class 4A Region 1 opener in Fairhope next Friday, Sept. 8.

Gulf Shores 31, Citronelle 0

Braden Jackson got it done on both sides of the ball for the Dolphins where he caught two touchdown passes, one on offense and one on defense. Jackson finished with 2 receptions for 61 receiving yards and a touchdown in addition to a 32-yard pick-six.

He was supplemented on defense by Isaiah Hammac’s team-leading 7 tackles as well as 5 tackles and 2 tackles for loss from Kingston Lowe. Offensively, the one-two punch of running backs Kolin Wilson (15 carries for 124 rushing yards) and Ronnie Royal (7 carries for 62 rushing yards) kept the ground game steady.

Gulf Shores (2-0, 1-0) recorded its first shutout victory since a 10-0 win over Blount on Oct. 22, 2021, and moved to 33-4 overall when allowing 10 or fewer points. The Dolphins will hit the road in Week 3 for a meeting with the Faith Academy Rams (2-0, 1-0).

Spanish Fort 44, Blount 0

The Toros got started early when the Blount Leopards fumbled the opening kickoff. The hosts capitalized after Aaden Shamburger connected with Chandler Wilson on a 5-yard passing touchdown to earn a 7-0 lead 53 seconds into the contest.

The Spanish Fort defense, led by double-digit tackles from Bishop Burkhalter and Sterling Dixon, went on to force three more turnovers including a pick-six from Aarion Riley to stymie the Blount offense. The win marked the Toros’ first shutout victory since a 42-0 win over Robertsdale on Sept. 11, 2020, and improved their overall record to 75-2 when opponents score fewer than 10 points.

The Spanish Fort offense got on the board thanks to rushing touchdowns from Sawyer Wilson (3 and 7 yards) and Drew Williamson (5 yards) as well as a field goal from Cam Lytle.

The Toros (1-1, 1-0) are set for a road trip to Bay Minette next Friday for a meeting with the Baldwin County Tigers (0-1).

Bayside Academy 38, Pike Lib 6

Drew Murphy (3 interceptions, 1 returned for touchdown) and Teague Broadhead (5- and 31-yard rushing touchdowns) powered Bayside Academy to victory.

Murphy stole three Pike Lib passes and returned one of his interceptions for a touchdown following a tipped pass. Billy Neill deflected a pass in the backfield and Murphy collected the errant throw at the 10-yard line before he cruised into the end zone untouched.

Broadhead plunged in from 5 yards out on his first scoring rush where he took three Patriot defenders into the end zone with him. His second touchdown run started up the middle before he broke one tackle and cut to the outside where he outran the rest of the Pike Lib defense. Caid Lyons put the finishing touches on the Admirals’ win with a 4-yard touchdown rush.

Bayside Academy (2-0) allowed fewer than 10 points for the second week in a row and improved its record to 49-1 when allowing opponents to score single-digit points. On the other side, the Admirals moved to 96-6 when scoring at least 30 points.

St. Michael 49, Chickasaw 18

Freshman quarterback Gunner Rivers threw it all over W. C. Majors Field and finished with 378 passing yards on 29-of-41 passing and six touchdown passes to tie St. Michael’s single-game scoring record.

Tucker Tomlinson’s 10 receptions led the receiving corps to go along with 188 receiving yards and a touchdown. Nick Russo caught two touchdown passes in addition to 6 carries and 80 rushing yards and freshman Brody Cella found himself on the receiving end of a 9-yard touchdown pass.

The Cardinals piled up 49 points in a game for the third time in program history after they recorded consecutive wins last year over Orange Beach (49-41) and Wilcox Central (49-6). St. Michael remained undefeated when scoring 40-plus points and moved to 11-0 all-time.

Next week’s Class 4A Region 1 opener between the Bayside Academy Admirals and St. Michael Cardinals (1-1) in Fairhope will be a rematch of an instant classic from last year that finished with a 17-14 decision for Bayside Academy.

Up next: Both teams will start region play next week where the Lions (2-0) will hit the road for a meeting with MGM (2-0) while the Tigers are set to host Spanish Fort.

South Choctaw 62, Snook Christian 0

Up next: Clarke Prep (2-0) will be the next opponent for the Eagles (0-3, 0-1) in non-region action on Thursday, Sept. 7.

Theodore 42, Robertsdale 0

Up next: The Golden Bears (0-1, 0-1) will travel across the Bay to face Blount and continue play within Class 6A Region 1.
