Baldwin County football roundup: St. Michael locks in first playoff berth

Orange Beach scores season’s first win; Fairhope, Bayside Academy return to win column

Posted

The Orange Beach Makos collected their first win of the season with a 45-28 decision over the Wilcox Central Jaguars on Friday night in Class 4A Region 1 action.

In the same region, Bayside Academy’s 38-14 win over Escambia County eliminated the Blue Devils from the playoffs and not only secured a playoff berth for the Admirals but also the St. Michael Cardinals.

In its seventh varsity season, St. Michael qualified for its first postseason trip after it set a single-season scoring record in Friday’s 42-21 loss to No. 4 Jackson. The Cardinals will enter their regular-season finale against T.R. Miller in Week 10 with a 4-2 mark in region play which will still be better than Escambia County (2-4) even if it wins.

St. Michael also became the first team this season to score double digits against the Jackson Aggies and now account for nearly half of the 43 total points allowed to region opponents. Jackson allowed 7 points to Demopolis and Escambia County, 6 points to Satsuma, 2 points to Orange Beach and kept Bayside Academy off the board.

Although it was St. Michael’s lowest scoring output since an overtime loss to Bayside Academy on Sept. 7, the Cardinals recorded their 319th points in their ninth game of the season to set a new school record with one regular-season game remaining before their first playoff run. The previous school record sat at 317 points over 10 games in 2021, the first year under current head coach Philip Rivers.

St. Michael has surpassed 40 points five times this season which has pushed its all-time record to 15-0 when scoring at least that many.

The Admirals raced out to a 24-0 lead in the third quarter before cruising to a second straight region win to improve to 4-2 within 4A-R1 with only a game against Satsuma left on the region schedule.

Senior Teague Broadhead’s 23-yard touchdown rush helped grab a 10-0 lead for Bayside Academy thanks to a 42-yard field goal from classmate Thomas Cunningham.

Fellow senior Tait Moore collected a touchdown on the ground and through the air to earn a nomination for Seacrest Furniture Athlete of the Week. His receiving score came on a 45-yard hookup from sophomore Sammy Dunn where Moore shoved a defender off him after the catch around the 25-yard line before running untouched to pay dirt.

Up next: The Admirals (6-2, 4-2) hit the road to face the Satsuma Gators (4-4, 2-4) for their final region contest of the season.

Although the host Hurricanes opened the scoring, the Pirates responded with 34 unanswered points to emphatically return to the win column.

Junior quarterback Jackson Robertson threw three touchdown passes and ran another score on top of a 22-yard rushing touchdown from senior and North Alabama commit Ameyr Adams. Robertson’s third-quarter rushing score came from 3 yards out.

Sophomore Bryon Martin hauled in a pair of Robertson’s touchdown throws including scoring receptions of 43 and 59 yards where the latter of which featured a one-handed catch on a deep ball. Senior Sanders Daniell, a Harvard commit, caught the other touchdown on a 24-yard screen pass.

Up next: The Pirates (2-6, 1-4) have an away game scheduled against the No. 9 Baker Hornets (6-2, 4-1) for Friday night.

No. 4 Jackson 42, St. Michael 21

Freshman quarterback Gunner Rivers racked up 213 passing yards on 15-of-38 passing with 2 touchdowns where 9 passes were caught by sophomore Brody Jones for 169 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Senior Martin Corte caught the other touchdown pass to go along with 61 rushing yards on 14 carries. Junior Ollie Deese led the defense with 11 total tackles and 1 tackle for loss. Classmate Cam Kerbal led five Cardinals who recorded 2 tackles for loss with 7 total tackles.

Up next: The Cardinals (5-4, 4-2) return home to face the T.R. Miller Tigers (6-2, 5-1) for their final game of the regular season ahead of a bye in Week 11.
