The First Settlers Memorial Brick Paver program will identify the families that settled in Baldwin County over 100 years ago.

Established on Jan. 17, 2017, by the Baldwin County Commission, the Alabama 200 Baldwin County Bicentennial Steering Committee, consisting of 13 members, was tasked with fostering awareness and appreciation of the county's heritage among its residents.

"During that time, the committee strove to engage residents and visitors in educational programs, community activities and other initiatives designed to teach, entertain and inspire," said Baldwin County's director of archives and history, Felisha Anderson. "In 2018, the Heritage Families project came to fruition with a purpose to tell the story of her people."

Anderson said she believes everyone who has stepped foot in the county has their own story.

"From the first settlers to the migrated farmers brought here," Anderson said. "Every person had a story; every person had a dream."

"The program encompasses many things. It will share the story of our ethnic roots," she said. "The program will also tell who we are and where we have come from to get to where we are today."

The project is structured into four phases. The initial phase will cover north Baldwin County, followed by a focus on central Baldwin in phase two, emphasis on the Eastern Shore in phase three and concluding with a focus on south Baldwin in phase four.

The first settler, the descendant and the area of the residence will be printed on the bricks.

An application process is ongoing and conducted to determine which families would be featured in the program. An application can be found on the Baldwin County Commission website.
