Due to anticipated severe cold weather, Baldwin County Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday and will commence classes with a late start on Wednesday.
BCPS released a notice on Jan. 15 from Superintendent Eddie Tyler, stating, “After significant discussion and consultation with weather and emergency officials, we have decided that Baldwin County Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday out of an abundance of caution for possible freezing rain and icy conditions in our area. School and central office employees will not report to work on Tuesday. There will be parts of Baldwin County which will not have any impact from this weather event, but I cannot, in good conscience, require families or buses to be on the roads with ice possible early in the morning.”
Classes will begin on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with school drop-offs beginning at 9:15 a.m. All staff will report to work two hours from normal report time.
Any absences on Wednesday will not be excused unless by normal methods.
According to the National Weather Service, overnight lows are expected to dip to 17 degree Tuesday night in Bay Minette, 19 in Foley, 20 in Fairhope and 22 in Gulf Shores.
Central Christian School, located in Robertsdale, posted an announcement via Facebook from Superintendent Tim Shelton that they will also be closing due to freezing weather conditions.
"The possibility of freezing rain and below freezing temperatures could cause icy conditions," said Shelton. "That possibility may seem somewhat remote, but we have chosen to err on the side of caution."
Classes will resume Wednesday at 10 a.m.
Bayshore Christian School also announced their closure.
Classes will resume Wednesday at 10 a.m. and carline will begin at 9:30 a.m.. There will be no morning care.
St. Michalel Catholic High School will be attending classes tomorrow with a delayed start of 10 a.m.
According to a Facebook post from the school, "On Tuesday, students will be allowed to wear athletic pants or jeans along with St. Michael sweatshirt/pullover (they do not have to wear their uniform shirts underneath but shuld wear another appropriate layer for warmth)."
Gulf Shores City Schools announced via Facebook that classes are expected to start at regular time on Tuesday, as they do not anticipate any issues for the Gulf Shores area in the morning.
"Our maintenance staff is checking all heating equipment in our schools and we will also check buses early tomorrow morning. We expect school to start at the regular time tomorrow," read the GSCS Facebook post.
Orange Beach City Schools classes and events will resume as normal on Tuesday.
A news release from Superintendent William Wilkes stated, "The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We will continue to monitor, and should the matters change, you will be notified."
