Bay Minette Police Department hosts annual Shopping with a Cop event; 17 children go on $350 shopping spree

Bay Minette Police Department (BMPD) recently enjoyed a lighthearted shopping experience with local children as part of the fifth annual Shopping with a Cop event. The department conducts multiple shopping excursions during the holidays, enabling personnel from various shifts to participate and assisting young participants in selecting items from their Christmas wish lists.

Police Chief Al Tolbert expressed enthusiasm for the positive impact of the program on both families and department employees.

"This is a great experience for the families and our employees," Police Chief Al Tolbert said. "Witnessing the smiles on the children's faces is exciting to experience! Huge thank you to all the supporters and those who contribute to make this program a success!"

Tolbert explained that the Department's School Resource Officers collaborate with teachers and counselors at local schools to identify students for the program. This year, 17 young individuals were selected, each provided with $350 to spend on their shopping spree. While many youth fulfilled their own wish lists, several also purchased gifts for family members.

"The kids are allowed to purchase what they want or need. Many times, the kids will purchase items for their siblings who are not in school," Tolbert said. "We have also experienced kids purchasing items for their pets, like food, bedding and toys."

To fund the shopping trips, the Department organizes an annual No Shave November fundraiser and accepts donations throughout the year for this and other community outreach projects. For further information on the program or details on making a donation, please contact BMPD at (251) 580-2559.
