The suspected shooter in an incident that injured one in Gulf Shores on March 27 has been arrested.

Gregory D. Tate III, an 18-year-old from Bay Minette, was taken into custody April 2 by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes Unit.

At approximately 8:40 p.m., a group of teenagers got into an altercation near the intersection of Hwy. 59 and East Beach Boulevard. The tussle turned violent when someone pulled a gun, shooting one juvenile in the leg, according to police reports.

The injured juvenile was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola and was treated and released the next day. The first arrest came in Jaytwon Williams, an 18-year-old from Bay Minette, who reportedly attempted to enter multiple vehicles while fleeing the scene. He has been charged in Gulf Shores with criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. He was the only arrest made on the night of the incident. Several additional suspects were investigated as the Gulf Shores Police Department (GSPD) worked to clarify who fired the gun.

In the week since the shooting occurred, detectives from the GSPD Criminal Investigation Division worked with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office and the Bay Minette Police Department to identify the suspected shooter.

GSPD issued an arrest warrant for Tate on Tuesday, April 2. He is charged with assault first degree.

“The City of Gulf Shores is a family-oriented beach community focused on providing a safe and positive environment for everyone to enjoy. The mayor, city council and the residents of Gulf Shores have empowered the police department to aggressively use all law enforcement resources available to identify, apprehend and seek prosecution for persons who have no regard for the sanctity of life and through their callous actions create a risk of injury or death to others,” GSPD said in a news release. “We will continue to focus additional resources at the beachfront and to take proactive measures to emphasize safety for our residents and visitors.”

The March 27 incident came just one year and one day after a 21-year-old Fairhope man was arrested after a fight in the same area led to the shooting of a teenage boy. As of February, he was still in custody and faces several charges, including attempted murder and reckless endangerment. On Feb. 28, his request to have his bond lowered from $1 million to $200,000 was granted by Judge Scott Taylor.
