For the first time in 24 varsity seasons, the Gulf Shores High School Dolphins are Alabama High School Athletic Association State Champions.

While no numbers were more important than the 21-14 score in the Class 5A championship game, Gulf Coast Media pulled some more stats and facts from the Alabama High School Football Historical Society to add perspective on the historic season at the beach.

Visit gulfcoastmedia.com/sports for full coverage of the Gulf Shores Dolphins’ first state title.

0: New team record for fewest losses in a season

Gulf Shores has its first undefeated season in its 24th year as a varsity program. Last year’s record of 11-2 was the previous fewest losses in a single season.

5: Shutouts on the season

With three in the regular season and two more in the postseason, it’s the most shutouts in a single season. 2023 was also only the third year with multiple shutout wins after the Dolphins recorded a pair in 2007 and 2021, the latter of which was also led by defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder.

6: Weeks ranked at No. 1

Since taking over as the top-ranked team in Class 5A with a 6-0 record in the Oct. 3 edition of the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s state poll, Gulf Shores never left the No. 1 spot. Since the Dolphins joined the state rankings for the first time in program history as preseason No. 8 ahead of the 2022 season, they have not left the top 10.

9.2: Average points allowed per game

Gulf Shores never allowed more than 21 points in a game (43-21 over B.C. Rain in regular-season finale) and only allowed 20 points to one other opponent (41-20 over St. Michael in regular-season opener).

15: New team record for wins in a season

Five of which came by 40 points or more. The Dolphins improved to 32-6 overall in Mark Hudspeth’s three years as head coach.

29.2: Average margin of victory

Only the state championship game was within single digits.

117: Isaiah Hammac’s team-leading tackle total

A key cog of Gulf Shores’ defensive unit, the senior safety added 8.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 5 quarterback hurries, a 60-yard interception return, 7 pass breakups, 4 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries on the year.

138: New team record for fewest points allowed in a season

VanGorder’s 2021 defense set the previous record at 176 points allowed. Only three other seasons (189 in 2006, 197 in 2007 and 199 in 2009) have ended with fewer than 200 points allowed.

576: New team record for most points scored in a season

Bettered the previous record set last year by 92 points.

2,017: New team record for rushing yards in a season by junior Kolin Wilson

Wilson registered triple-digit rushing yards in all but three of the Dolphins’ games this year. He scored at least one rushing touchdown in all 15 games and finished with 31 total rushing touchdowns. Added 21 catches for 231 receiving yards with 2 touchdowns and 115 kickoff return yards for 2,363 total yards.

11,821: Total yards in Ronnie Royal’s six-year high school career

Between 7,055 rushing yards, 1,793 receiving yards, 282 passing yards and 2,691 return yards, Royal also recorded 123 total touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, he registered 239 total tackles and 15 interceptions. Royal closed his high school career as the Class 5A MVP.

43,014: Total attendance at the 2023 Super 7 Championships

Thursday’s total, including Classes 1A, 3A and 5A, was recorded at 13,212 which followed Friday’s Classes 2A, 4A and 6A finals with 17,911. Wednesday’s two girls’ flag football championships and the Class 7A game saw 11,891 attendees.
